Jami
Omar
Introduction
& Brief History
During 1980’s when Ottawa’s Muslim population, particularly in the west-end,
was growing rapidly, having one mosque far away from the west was a serious
issue to attend Friday prayers let alone attending other daily prayers. Islamic
education for our children was also suffering as there was a lack of formal
schools offering quality education in the west.
Some
concerned and sincere elders and brothers of the west-end community continued
investigating the possibility to establish a masjid in the west-end. Given the
geography of Kanata, it was agreed that there is no centrally located
affordable place in Kanata that could serve the purpose. Additionally, there
was a need to provide services to the residents of Bayshore,
Greenbank-Baseline-Craig Henry corridor, Barrhaven and Bell’s Corners.
Our dedicated brothers and sisters continued the efforts for more than 3 years.
We have had an imminent solution in 1987-88, however, it fell through.
The spirit of our dedicated community members neither abated nor dampened in
any way. After a few months of an early setback, one of our elders called a
meeting in his house to formalize the efforts. May Allah (S) reward them all in
abundance for their persistence and the community spirit. That meeting served
the springboard to establish an association. Those brothers present at the
meeting acted as Shura members and Jamiatul Muslemeen of Ottawa-Carleton was
initiated.
The
search for a place continued over the next few months. In 1993, the Bible
Baptist church located at 572 Moodie Drive came up on sale. Brothers agreed
that it was most central to the community of interest Jamiatul Muslemeen of
Ottawa-Carleton (JMOC) intending to serve.
Additionally, there was ample undeveloped pieces of potential lands that could
be acquired to expand the facility further at a later date.
Through one pious Muslim sister, working at the time as real estate agent, an
offer to purchase the place was put forward. All praise belong to our Creator
Allah (S), through His will, your association was successful in purchasing the
functional church at this central, strategic location. Now we had a masjid
within 10 km of commuting distance for the various communities of interest
surrounding Bell’s Corners.
