Your Lord has decreed that you worship none except Him, and (that you show) dutifulness to parents…(Quran,17:23)
Dutifulness to parents is one of the Prophets noted characteristics. Nabi ‘Isa son of Maryam (‘alayhimas-salam) was described to be dutiful to his Mother. Nabi Ibrahim and Nuh (‘alayhimas-salam’s) supplications for their parents are both recorded in the Quran. Nabi Yahya (‘alayhis-salam) is described in the Quran as “dutiful toward his parents and he was not arrogant, disobedient.”(19:14). Imam al-Tabari (may Allah be pleased with him) explains that Nabi Yahya hastened to show his love for his parents in fulfilling their directives. He was not pride and did not disobey his lord nor his parents. Allah says: “Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and kind treatment unto parents …”(4:36). This is a clear indication that dutifulness towards parents is paramount in Islam as it comes right after the command of worshipping Allah alone.
Dutifulness to parents includes kind treatment and regardfulness for them while they are alive and after their demise. In their lifetime children will express kind treatment (in deed and statement) through beautiful speech, lowering of the voice, staying in touch, serving, spending and fulfilling their needs. One should always try to be mindful of their feelings and seeking ways of pleasing them and making du’a for them.
After their demise Children will strive to make du’a and asking Allah to forgive them, donating reward to them through charity and trying ones level best in fulfilling their promises (that were unfulfilled in their lifetime). The importance of upholding family ties which they up held and maintaining good relations with their friends is also emphasized.
Rewards for Dutifulness towards parents:
· Securing a blessed life in both worlds.
· Attaining Allah’s pleasure.
· Acquiring a noble characteristic that Prophets themselves exemplified.
Two Quranic Dua’s for Parents in their lifetime and after their demise (may Allah protect and have mercy upon them all):
ربِّ ارْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِيْ صَغِيرًا
"My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small." (17:24)
رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لِيْ وَلِوَالِدَيَّ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ يَوْمَ يَقُوْمُ الْحِسَابُ
Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers the Day the account is established. (14:41)
